HomeThe Sociology Department at San Diego State University has been, and remains, a department strong in teaching, research and community service. Our strength is especially evident in the number of students we serve, including about 450 undergraduate majors and more than 40 graduate students in the Sociology master’s degree program and in the Criminology joint-master’s degree program in coordination with the Criminal Justice Department. Our faculty research interests include immigration and border issues, globalization and labor problems, race and class, social psychology, mental illness, health and illness, education, deviance and crime. The Department publishes Mobilization: An International Quarterly, a top-ten sociology journals. It is the premier journal of research in social movements and protest. We emphasize the importance of community-based service learning classes in our teaching program. The Department offers a wide range of courses in areas such as 1) Community Structure and Institutions, 2) Inequalities (encompassing race, class, labor, and healthcare), 3) Diversity and Change, 4) Crime and Control, and 5) Microsociology. The Sociology Department serves a central role in the College of Arts and Letters and in the broader University and San Diego regional and border communities. |
