Graduate

The Department of Sociology at San Diego State University offers a graduate program leading to the Master of Arts degree in Sociology. Students who earn an M.A. in this program may go on to pursue a doctorate in Sociology at other universities or, more directly, into research, teaching, social services, or administrative positions.

Teaching plays a key role at the University and our graduate students have access to some of the finest teachers in the field. A number of our faculty members are nationally and internationally known in their areas of specialization. A Proseminar class for new graduate students includes presentations by Department faculty who discuss their teaching and research interests and projects. The department also offers a course on teaching sociology, designed to introduce graduate students to several pedagogical issues in higher education including teaching from a multicultural perspective; constructing course syllabi, exams, and writing assignments; using student centered exercises in addition to traditional instructional methods such as lecturing; evaluating student and teacher performance; and, developing teaching portfolios for use in applying for teaching positions.
