Field Internship

The Department of Sociology’s Field Internship Program is designed to provide undergraduate students the opportunity to apply sociological knowledge, analytical abilities, and research skills to the practical concerns of organizations in the “real world.” Earn three to six credits for the sociology major by volunteering or working eight hours per week for one or two semesters. Internships may be occupationally oriented in a business of your choosing, may be a placement in a community-based organization, or may be research oriented working with a faculty member. General requirements for participating in the program:

  • 3.2 GPA or higher
  • completed a research methods course
  • solid college writing skills
  • approval of the Intern Coordinator

Students must submit an application for enrollment prior to the beginning of the semester in which they intend to participate in the program. Shortly before the start of the semester, the Coordinator will provide a schedule number to those students who qualify to participate. If interested in applying, contact Professor Paul Sargent, Field Intern Coordinator at sargent@mail.sdsu.edu for application instructions and deadlines.
