Today there are 13 million children growing up in low-income communities and only half of them are graduating from high school. Only 1 in 10 of them are going to college. Unfortunately, because African American and Latino or Hispanic students are three times more likely to be growing up in poverty, the problem of educational inequity disproportionately affects communities of color. You can change this – by serving both as an amazing teacher and an inspirational role model.
Teach For America is looking for top college graduates of all academic majors and backgrounds to commit to teach in for two years in one of the 35 low-income regions we work in. Students of all academic backgrounds and majors can participate because you actually have the opportunity to earn your credential, or your master’s degree in education, at the same time as earning a full salary and benefits.
At the end of the two years you can stay in the classroom, or take advantage of our many employer partnerships or graduate school partnerships because we believe that if we are really going to solve this problem we are going to need both amazing teachers in the classroom and some of those teachers to step out of the classroom and become leaders who can speak with credibility about the problems facing children growing up in low-income communities.
All it takes is a resume and a cover letter to apply . Candidates moving forward in the admissions process will have the opportunity to discuss their experiences and passion for serving kids in low income communities through a phone interview and in-person interview. Only candidates making it to the final in-person interview will need to submit letters of recommendation and transcripts. Accepted applicants would attend a summer training this summer and start teaching next fall.
So take the first step, and register online. There you will be able to check out the application to find out more. Once you have registered you will have a username and password so you can come back to the application as many times as you like before submitting it.
If you apply by our next application deadline on January 8, 2010, you will know whether or not you were accepted by March 8, 2010. When you apply you put what cities, subjects and grades you are interested in and if accepted you will receive an offer of a specific city, subject and grade. You are not committing to anything by applying, just seeing if you receive an offer. Once you receive an offer you get to decide whether or not you want to accept it.
I encourage you to learn more about our program by attending one of our online webinars (information sessions) – Check out the full event schedule online.
