The History of Aztec Rugby

SDSU Aztec Rugby found its roots in 1958 when a group of "odd balls", each of similar mindset, gathered in the Aztec Bowl in an attempt to introduce to SDSU a new and wildly exciting sport. It was their relentless drive to overcome adversity that managed to keep them afloat and compete inter-collegiately during the early years. Their philosophical approach of "blood, sweat and tears" allowed them to experience a Cinderella first season by clinching the conference title.

This winning tradition has since flourished to include numerous conference titles as will as the Collegiate National Championship in 1987. This "Tradition of Excellence" remains an Aztec Rugby benchmark as the Aztecs compete each season against such powerhouses as UCLA, CSULB, UA, ASU, UCSB and CPSLO.

Aztec Rugby, regarded as one of SDSU's premier sports teams, has posted a 167-37-3 record over the past 5 years, finishing each season within the top three and qualifying for post-season play. The 1997-1998 season kicks off with great expectations, with 11 of 15 starters returning. This young, yet experienced team lead by All-American returnee Aaron Blatt shows the tenacity and desire to return SDSU Rugby once again to Collegiate supremacy.
