Background & Objectives

Pi Tau Sigma is the National Honorary Mechanical Engineering Society and is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. There are presently 129 active chapters at universities in almost every state of the United States. The concept of Pi Tau Sigma was initiated simultaneously at the University of Illinois and at the University of Wisconsin in 1915. Pi Tau Sigma was formed in 1916 by these two schools.
The object of this organization shall be to foster the high ideals of the engineering profession, to stimulate interest in coordinate departmental activities, to promote the mutual professional welfare of its members, and to develop in students of mechanical engineering the attributes necessary for effective leadership and the assumption of the responsibilities of a citizen in a democracy.
Pi Tau Sigma, being the Mechanical Engineering Honor Society, is open only to Mechanical Engineers. Only Juniors in the top fourth of their class or Seniors in the top third of their class (measured by GPA and number of units) will be eligible for membership.
