Background & Objectives

Pi Tau Sigma is the National Honorary
Mechanical Engineering Society and is a member of the Association of College
Honor Societies. There are presently 129 active chapters at universities
in almost every state of the United States. The concept of Pi Tau Sigma
was initiated simultaneously at the University of Illinois and at the University
of Wisconsin in 1915. Pi Tau Sigma was formed in 1916 by these two schools.

The object of this organization shall
be to foster the high ideals of the engineering profession, to stimulate
interest in coordinate departmental activities, to promote the mutual professional
welfare of its members, and to develop in students of mechanical engineering
the attributes necessary for effective leadership and the assumption of
the responsibilities of a citizen in a democracy.

Pi Tau Sigma, being the Mechanical Engineering
Honor Society, is open only to Mechanical Engineers. Only Juniors in the
top fourth of their class or Seniors in the top third of their class (measured
by GPA and number of units) will be eligible for membership.
