Lesson 9 -- Clip Flange Assembly

Pro/ENGINEER Functions

Assembly Insert
Components Align

Design Objective

This lesson allows you to create the assembly shown in Figure V.9-1. The assembly is composed of the clip flange you created in Lessons 1 and 2, a shaft inserted into the flange, and a pin which holds the assembly together.

Modeling Strategy

I. Create the shaft and pin.

II. Insert the shaft into the clip flange, then align the flange shaft so the pin holes are coaxial.

III. Insert the pin through the pin hole.

Detailed Construction

I. Create the shaft and pin as separate parts. Do this on your own.

  1. First, create the shaft as shown in Figure V.9-2.
  2. Next, create the pin as shown in Figure V.9-3.

II. Insert the shaft into the clip flange, then align the flange shaft so the pin holes are coaxial.

  1. Create a new assembly:
    1. - Assembly - Create
    2. Enter assembly name: [assem]
  2. Recall the flange and the shaft:
    1. - Component - Assemble - Enter name: [flange]
    2. - Assemble - Enter name: [shaft]
The component should appear in a separate window on the screen. Check the "In Window" box.
  3. Insert the shaft into the flange:
    1. - Insert - Use Query Sel to select the shaft on its cylindrical surface.
    2. - Use Query Sel to select the interior cylindrical surface of the flange. Note the message window.
  4. Align the shaft in the flange so that the axes of each thru hole are colinear:
    1. - Align - Use Query Sel to select the axis of the shaft thru hole.
    2. - Use Query Sel to select the axis of the flange thru hole.
    1. - Done
The shaft should now appear in the flange, inserted and aligned as specified.

III. Insert the pin through the hole:

  1. - Assemble
  2. Enter name : [ pin ]
  3. - Done - Insert
  4. Use Query Sel to select the pin on its cylindrical surface.
  5. Use Query Sel to select the pin hole on the flange.
  6. - Align Offset
  7. Use Query Sel to select the flat face of the pin. If you constructed it right, this is a datum plane.
  8. Choose red or yellow.
  9. Select the datum passing thru the flange that is normal to the flange thru hole.
  10. Choose the same color as before.
  11. Enter 300 for the offset.
  12. - Done

Change the color of the parts and create and include a drawing file with your frame and with one isometric and one exploded view of the assembly.
