    Concilio Minutes

    February 22,1997

Meeting called to order at 9:30

Representatives from all member departments present as well as graduate students.

The meeting opened with a report on the situation confronting City College. Ternot MacRenato stated that there was a problem filling teaching positions at City due to administrative inconsistencies that also exist at the district level.

Out of Professor MacRenato's report it was decided that all the Chicano Studies Dept. chairs should come together along with a Concilio Rep to address curriculum and hiring practices along with departmental objectives.

The next report was given by Arturo Arevalos Professor at Mira Costa College. He reported on the award Mira Costa received. He went on to caution the Concilio that there is still a lot of room for improvement, especially in the area of offering tenure to instructors.

Next, John Valdez Professor at Palomar College reported on some very positive events happening at Palomar. He announced the Spring Cha Cha to be held March 8, 1997 from 5-9pm for more information call Diana Padilla at 795-6287 or John Valdez 746-7273. This fashion show and dinner is being put on by the Latina club as well as others. The tickets are $20.00 with proceeds going to their scholarship drive. He also mentioned the fact that there is now a MECHA Central in the North Co.

Professor Danny Martinez of Grossmont College and SDSU gave a report on the state of Chicano Studies affairs at Grossmont College. He expressed his concerns with the lack of real progress in this area. He went on to say however, that MECHA is very active in outreach programs in the area high schools, and well represented among the college ASB.

Professor Isidro Ortiz of SDSU was very positive in his report. He stated the success they had in hiring a full time faculty member for the Mexican American Studies Department. The department has recently hired Maria De la Luz Ibarra who is receiving her Ph.D. from U.C. Santa Barbara in the field of Anthropology. He went on to state that the department now counts with 90 majors and minors, an unprecedented number. Cine Estudiantil will be held this March 15th with James Edward Olmos being the Key note speaker.

The following report was given by David J. Vega, Secretary of the Concilio. I shared the progress of the Concilio home page now under construction. I acknowledged that it would not be possible without Dr. Griswold Del Castillo offering us a link to the SDSU MAS home page, and for all his assistance. I need membership biographies form all new and old members. There will be an attached form you can fill out (e-mail me at IKON@watsonwyatt.com) with your vital statistics. I also reported on the e-mail list for the Concilio, however, if your reading these minute you already know about it .

Our final report came from Rodolfo Jacobo, president of the Concilio. Rodolfo challenged the member departments of the Chicano Studies Concilio to serve as an example to other departments and institutions with regards to the professional relationship between the departments and the part time faculty. He added "Our departments will be that much stronger if as we pursue our academic and professional objectives, we do not loose sight of Hermandad, Carnalismo, Y Familia."

    Respectfully Submitted
    David Vega
    Concilio Secretary
