Resources
  • Books to Read

For a first person account of a Kumeyaay Indian woman read: Delfina Cuero: Her Autobiography: An Account of Her Last Years . . . ed. Florence C. Shepek (San Diego: Ballena Press, 1991), pp. 21-66)

A good primary source for documentary reader is from Minna and Gordon Hewes, eds. and trans., Indian Life and Customs at Mission San Luis Rey: A record of California Mission Life by Pablo Tac, an Indian Neophyte written about 1835 (San Luis Rey: Old Mission, 1958).

Robert F. Heizer, ed. "California," in Handbook of North American Indians, William C. Sturtevant, General ed. (Washington D.C.: Smithsonian, 1978). The best source with detailed studies by experts on every major California group.
