Prospective Students

Welcome to the Department of Linguistics and Asian/Middle Eastern Languages. We offer undergraduate and graduate studies leading to BA and MA degrees in linguistics, as well as programs in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Tagalog and, now, Vietnamese. In addition, the Department offers Certificates in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL).

The linguistics program offers coursework in all areas of linguistic analysis: the core areas of phonology, syntax, semantics, and historical linguistics; and interdisciplinary areas such as applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, bilingualism, computational linguistics, and the linguistics of certain languages and language families.

The language programs offer a major and minor in Japanese and a minor in Chinese. In addition, several levels of language courses are offered in Arabic and Hebrew.

The Graduate linguistics program offers a number of opportunities for teaching, research or other forms of financial support.
