*IB students doing Chinese may test out of or waive the lower division courses (101-202) if they show proficiency in the language, determined by the Chinese program. That doesn't mean they get credit or units for the courses waived; it just means that they don't need to take the lower division courses before starting upper division Chinese. For upper division Chinese, every student needs to take 12 units in the language section.. If they don't take Chinese 301 for example, they need to take 302, 431, 434 and a fourth course.  Besides all the courses from the Chinese emphasis section, students need two additional Chinese courses from the regional/cultural section.
