How to Choose a Specializaton

Which specialization you choose depends in part on whether you wish to do a special education, bilingual, or regular credential and whether or not you wish to apply for the fast-track Integrated Program (4.5 years total), complete the traditional program (4 years of LIB S plus 1 year of credential), or add a subject matter authorization to a regular credential in order to teach in middle school. You should use the Specialization Flow Chart to determine which specialization best matches your needs.

Specializations

Literature Social Science Mathematics Art History or Studio Arts Physical Education
Linguistics Ethnic Studies Science Music Human Development - Catalog Year 2006-2007 and later.*
Spanish     Theatre Human Development - Catalog Year 2005-2006 and earlier.*

* Note that students usually follow the most recent versions of the specialization because they reflect changes in course offerings. Students who have a major catalog year of 2005-06 or earlier must follow the chart for Human Development for the Year 2005-2006 and earlier (Child and Family Development 375A is substituted for CFD 371). The 2006-2007 and later Human Development Specialization requires more units.

Middle School Options

The subject matter authorizations needed in order to teach middle school require 32 units in one subject area. Currently there is a shortage of single subject teachers certified to teach math and science. Liberal Studies graduates who have a multiple subject credential and a subject matter authorization in math or science (and sometimes English) are being hired, especially by K-8 and K-12 districts.
