REGISTRATION PROBLEMS

Problems for Freshmen and Sophomores

The computer says you are unable to register. If you have not registered for the required composition, math, oral communication, or critical thinking course, the computer will block registration in all other courses.

The computer says you are in the wrong major. Check the footnotes. General Studies 130, for example, is open only to students officially declared as Liberal Studies pre-major or major. Most other lower division Liberal Studies courses are open to any student.

The computer says you are not in the correct class level. Check the footnotes. Exercise and Nutritional Sciences 241A/B is open only to sophomores; i.e., students who have 30 or more units. Education 200, when offered during fall semester, is open only to sophomores. If you are a second-semester sophomore and are beginning to take upper division courses, note that Music 343 is open only to juniors; i.e., students with 60 units or more.

Problems for Juniors and Seniors

The computer says you are unable to register because you are in the wrong major. The most probable explanation is that you are still a Liberal Studies "premajor." Students must be in the "major" to register for Liberal Studies courses listed on the tentative sequence chart for Junior Semester II, Senior Semester I, and Senior Semester II. The footnotes in the Class Schedule tell if a class is restricted. You can tell which major you are in by checking your unofficial transcript on web-portal. If it says "Pre-Liberal Studies," you are in the "pre-major"; if it just says "Liberal Studies," you are in the upper-division "major."

The computer says a class in your specialization is restricted. Some specialization classes, especially in the Physical Education specialization, are restricted to upper division Liberal Studies majors. If you think the footnote is incorrect based on your specialization advising sheet, contact the program immediately. Dr. Roeder may need to contact the department to have the Liberal Studies codes added.

The computer says you haven't met the prerequisites. You will need to complete the prerequisites before you can take the desired course. Note that courses in the mathematics, Spanish, physical education, and theatre specializations need to be taken in the correct sequence. For the Human Development specialization, Psychology 331 and 333 require proof that students have completed Psychology 101 and either Psychology 230, General Studies 130, or Child and Family Development 270 as prerequisites, and Child and Family Development 537 requires proof that students have completed Child and Family Development 375A, but not the other courses listed in the 2006-2007 catalog. Students should give their professor a copy of their unofficial transcript. If necessary, the Liberal Studies Office will provide a note verifying which prerequiste requirements have been satisfied.

You want to know where LIB S 498 meets. For the location, check the Liberal Studies web site under Workshops. Location is usually posted the week before classes start.
