Hon. Richard E. Wiley

Biography


Richard E. Wiley, a senior partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Wiley, Rein & Fielding, is a former Chaiman, Commissioner and General Counsel of the Federal Communications Commisssion. During his FCC tenure (1970-77), he was a leading force in the effort to foster increased competition and lessened regulation in the communications field.

Dick Wiley has been recognized three times as one of the nation's 100 "most influential" lawyers by The National Law Journal. He has been the subject of recent profiles in the New York Times ("Telecommunications' Ubiquitous Man of Influence"), the American Lawyer and the National Law Journal. He was the 1996 recipient of the Electronic Industries Association's Medal of Honor and was recently admitted into Broadcasting & Cable magazine's Hall of Fame. Since 1987, Mr. Wiley has served as Chairman of the FCC's Advisory Committee on High Definition Television.

A native of Illinois, Mr. Wiley graduated with distinction from Northwestern (B.S. and J.D. degrees) and Georgetown (LL.M.), and has received a distinguished alumnus award from each University. He also is Chair of the Advisory Board of Columbia University's Institute for Tele- Information.
