Eddie C.Y. Kuo

Biography


Prof. Eddie C. Y. Kuo (PhD, Minnesota) is the founding Dean (since 1992) of the School of Communication Studies at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He was formerly Head of Sociology Department (1986-90), Director of the Centre for Advanced Studies (1986- 88) and Director of the Mass Communication Programme (1990-95) at the National University of Singapore.

A sociologist by training, Professor Kuo's research interests include communication policy and planning, information technology and information society, cultural policy and national integration, and sociology of multilingualism. He has published in Journal of Communication, Gazette, Telecommunications Policies, Journal of Psychology, Journal of Social Psychology, Asian Survey, Columbia Journal of World Business, Southeast Asian Journal of Social Sciences, International Journal of Sociology of Language, and Anthropological Linguistics. He has authored/edited more than 10 books, including the following: Language and Society in Singapore (1980), Communication Policy and Planning in Singapore (1983), Information Technology and Singapore Society (1990), < Mirror on the Wall: Media in a Singapore Election (1993), and Videotex Development in the Asia-Pacific (1995).

Prof. Kuo is the founding co-editor of Asian Journal of Communication (Singapore). He also serves in the advisory boards of Journal of Asia-Pacific Communication (USA), Journal of Development Communication (Malaysia), Journal of International Communication (Australia), and Chinese Journal of Communication (Hong Kong). He is also a board member of the International Center for Communications (USA).

Active in public and social service, Prof. Kuo serves as Chairman of Publications Appeal Committee and Chairman of Advisory Committee on Chinese TCS (Television) Shows (ACCESS) under the Ministry of Information and the Arts, Singapore, and board member of the Singapore Broadcasting Aurthority. He has also been a board member of the Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC) since its founding in 1992.
