The Role of Telecommunications

(175 pages)

In April,1993, the mayor of San Diego, Susan Golding, formed a committee to examine the importance of an advanced information infrastructure and the potential of San Diego becoming an international information city. In March 1994, after continual meetings of all involved, "San Diego: City of the Future, The Role of Telecommunications" was presented to the mayor. This document, produced by a committee consisting of political, business, and academic leaders from the San Diego County area, provides many detailed reccomendations for becoming the informational "city of the future." These recommendations are outlined below:

  1. Establish a private/ public partnership for the planning and use of a community-wide grid;

  2. Develop a telecommunications policy office;

  3. Accelerate government use of telecommunications;

  4. Establish a federal/ state funding task force;

  5. Identify and reward private initiatives, such as education, health care, and public information;

  6. Continue the study effort making San Diego a global village;

  7. Maximize San Diego's human resources: education and defense conversions;

  8. Blur the geographical and political borders;

These committee recommendations were based on the findings of nine subcomittees. Those subcommittee findings are provided in detail, as well as identification of those individuals involved, within the document.

The Mayor's announcement and the committee and subcommittee meeting reports and rosters can be found in the appendices of this publication.
