Arthur R. Barron

Biography


Arthur R. Barron retired from Time Warner Inc., in May 1995, having served as chairman of Time Warner International, a corporate unit charged with strategic development outside of the U.S. and developing new business ventures, partnerships, acquisition and investments in the international media and entertainment industries. He also had been chairman of Time Warner Enterprises, a strategic and business development unit of Time Warner Inc.

Barron had worked for Paramount Communications Inc., formerly Gulf+Western Inc., for 26 years prior to retiring in July 1989. From 1984 until his retirement from Paramount, Barron was president of Paramount Communication Inc.'s Entertainment Group, which includes Paramount Pictures, Madison Square Garden, the New York Knicks and New York Rangers, theater operations, Cinema International Corp., and United International Pictures. Previously, he had been executive vice-president of the Entertainment and Publishing Group of Gulf+Western Inc.

From 1967 to 1983, Barron held several positions, including chief financial officer and executive vice-president at Paramount Pictures, Corp., and for the previous four years he was vice-president and general sales manager for worldwide syndication at Desilu Productions, Inc. Prior to Desilu, Barron worked for Coopers & Lybrand, a national firm of Certified Public Accountants.

A native of Arnolds Park, Iowa, Barron was born July 12, 1934. He served in the U.S. Navy before receiving a B.S. in accounting from San Diego State University in 1960. He is a California Certified Public Accountant.

Barron previously was a member of the State Department Advisory Committee on International Communications and Information Policy; the Commerce Department Advisory Committee on High Definition Television; the Board of Trustees of the Business Council for International Understanding; Advisory Committee for the Center for Strategic & International Studies and the Board of Directors of the Russian American Chamber of Commerce. Barron is presently a Trustee of the American Museum of the Moving Image; a Trustee of the Montana Chapter of the Nature Conservancy; Chairman of the Japan-U.S. Telecommunications Research Institute and Founding Chairman and now Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of the International Center for Communications at San Diego State University, where he remains a Trustee. He was awarded the Commander of Arts & Letters in 1987 which is one of the highest civilian commendations given by the French Government.

Barron and his wife Joan reside in Beach Haven, NJ and in New York City, NY.
