A New Agenda for US-Japan Cooperation

(16 Pages)

(English and Japanese Text)

Today, there is almost nothing of importance that happens anywhere that isn't reported instantly around the world. The new global village is being shaped by a realignment of power to world public opinion and a redefinition of wealth as information. Although these trends are emerging, historical and cultural differences must be observed. New devices for adaptation to these differences have surfaced such as the EEC and NAFTA. Both the US and Japan should form a similar alliance or accord as technological leaders in global markets shaping the new world order of communications. This accord might include a dialogue on the issues of critical importance to the development of a Pacific Community, a framework for regional cooperation and consensus building; a redefinition of the roles of government and quasi- governmental regional organizations; and most importantly, a commitment to forging a new partnership to link the Pacific family of nations together economically and politically.
