Opening Session and Press Conference:
Defining SmartCommunities
|
|
|
|
Cities of the past were built along
waterways, railroads, and interstate highways. Cities of the
Future will be built along information highways. Caltrans,
the agency responsible for building California's bridges,
roads and extensive highway system, knows that
telecommunications is not only an essential ingredient in
advanced transportation systems, but is in fact a substitute
for transportation itself. Toward that end, Caltrans
commissioned the SDSU International Center for
Communications to develop a guidebook -- an overarching
vision of a smart community, along with a "how-to" -- for
the use and benefit of communities throughout the State of
California.

Smart Cities: Developed and Developing
|
|
|
There are different ways in which a SmartCommunity
initiative can get started. In some cases, the leadership
will be from the university such as UC Davis took the lead
to benefit the Davis community. In San Jose or Smart Valley,
it was the business community. In San Diego the leadership
came from a broad coalition of both private and public
interests.

Communications and World Community"
This distinguished SDSU International Award recognizes
the inextricable link between communication and community,
the principle on which SDSU's International Center for
Communications was founded. The award is presented to
recognize that person or persons who distinguishes themself
in the field of communication by some deed or act which
promotes or futhers the development of community through
