Hugo Murillo-Jimenez
Hugo Murillo-Jiménez (University of California, San Diego, 1978) is a Latin American historian with a specialty in Central America. Born in Costa Rica, he was among the first citizens of that country to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in the United States. He holds degrees from the University of Costa Rica, San Diego State University, and the University of California, San Diego. His emphasis is the history of Inter-American relations and Central American political history. A second area of interest is the study of revolutionary movements in Mexico, Cuba, and Central America. His publications include a book on the intervention of the United States in Costa Rica in 1917-1919, and numerous articles on various aspects of the role of the United States in Central America. He was a tenured professor at the University of Costa Rica for twenty-two years, reaching the rank of Full Professor in 1986. He has traveled extensively throughout Latin America and has ample experience in teaching courses on Latin America, and in university administration. His academic career includes appointments as visiting professor at Utah State University (Fulbright Scholar), Southern Methodist University, the University of Kansas, the University of Alabama (Fulbright Scholar), and Indiana University. He has been at San Diego State University since 1996, teaching in the History Department and the Latin American Studies Program, and working in international programs. He directs the SDSU Summer Program in Costa Rica. He was Associate Director and co-Graduate Adviser of the SDSU Center for Latin American Studies from 1999 to 2003, and Interim Director during the 2001-2002 academic year.
