Founded at the University of California of Berkeley in 1906, Pi Delta Phi, the national French honor society, has as its goals:
bullet to recognize outstanding scholarship in French language and literature;
bullet to increase knowledge of the contribution of French-speaking countries to world culture;
bullet to stimulate and encourage such cultural activities that will lead to a deeper appreciation of these countries.
 


Since that time the society has grown to over 60,000 members in nearly 300 chapters across the United States and in France.
