Québec, Canada

Québec is Canada's largest and oldest province. Located in the eastern part of the country, it is bordered on the south by Maine and New York. The long-standing cooperation between Canada and the United States was enhanced by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which brought together these two trading partners with México to form what is potentially the largest single trading bloc in the world. A broader understanding of Canada would be a particularly valuable tool for the thoughtful American university student.

Eight out of ten Québecois are descendants of French colonists who founded New France in the 1600s. Québec's community maintained its culture, religion, and native tongue even after France lost its empire to the British. Today, the Anglophone (English-speaking) and Francophone (French-speaking) cultures continue to coexist in Québec. All IP students participate in a six-week intensive French language program at Université Laval, prior to the beginning of fall semester.

Participating institutions include three anglophone universities (Concordia and McGill in Montreal, and Bishop's in Lennoxville) and four francophone universities
(Laval in Quebec City, University of Montreal, Sherbrooke,
and the University of Quebec, a multi-campus system).
At Francophone universities, all courses are taught in French. Students attending Anglophone institutions take at least one French language course each term in addition to courses
in their major field.

Language Requirement

None for Anglophone universities; two years of college-level French for Francophone universities. See Canada brochure available from you IP Campus Coordinator.
