Bachelor of Arts in French 
Single Subject Credential Program

The Single Subject Teaching Credential Program in French provides prospective teachers with competence in written and spoken French, an introduction to French literature and civilization, and training in phonetics, linguistics and methodology. 


The program of studies is under revision.


Students who wish to pursue a Single Subject Credential should make an appointment to speak with
the Credential Adviser, 
Dr. Edith J. Benkov at 594-5127 (BA 305),
or ebenkov@mail.sdsu.edu.

Departmental Proficiency Examinations*
To be recommended for admission to the student teaching program, 
candidates must also pass the departmental proficiency examination in written French and receive a rating of at least Advanced High (ACTFL OPI scale).

Praxis II - Subject Assessment
Four specialty tests in the Praxis II Series cover the course work and examinations specified by the SDSU Credential Waiver Program in French. 
Candidates may waive requirements for departmental recommendation by receiving passing grades on all four of the following tests:

·  Foreign Language Pedagogy (Code 10840)

·  French listening test* (Code 10170)

·  French linguistic, literary and cultural analysis (Code 30172)

·  French speaking test* (Code 20171)

Candidates who do not pass all four tests should consult the French department credential advisor concerning additional SDSU course work or examination requirements.

* Asterisked requirements are waived for candidates holding a French baccalauréat or other equivalent secondary school diploma from an institution where at least half of the regular instruction was in French.

you should know about these professional organizations :

AATF (American Association of teachers of French)
The most important national organization for French teachers,
it is your source for up-to-date information
on the teaching of French as a second language.
When you join the national AATF,
 you automatically become a member of the local San Diego Chapter. 

ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages)
The major academic organization concerned with language teaching.  

CLTA (California Language Teachers Association)
The California group concerned with languages. It too has a local chapter .

Membership in these organizations will help you become better acquainted with your chosen profession and will allow you to meet your colleagues and share knowledge and pedagogy.  They also offer many practical resources for teaching.

And, don't forget the Alliance Française of San Diego.
