Frederick W. Kasch Endowment for Graduate Study in Exercise Science

The Frederick W. Kasch Endowment for Graduate Study in Exercise Science was developed to honor Dr. Frederick W. Kasch, Emeritus Professor, a pioneer and leader in his field in the Department of Physical Education (presently known as the Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences) at San Diego State University 1948 through 1980. The highest personal and professional standards, as characteristic of the endowment honoree, are at the core of all endowment discussions and award decisions.

This endowment was created for eligible and deserving graduate students in the Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at San Diego State University (SDSU) for the purposes of encouraging and supporting student research and academic growth as outlined in the following provisions:

PROVISIONS OF THE FREDERICK W. KASCH ENDOWMENT FOR GRADUATE STUDY IN EXERCISE SCIENCE

  1. To provide partial expense reimbursement for Master's thesis, Doctoral dissertation, or other research project completion
  2. To provide partial graduate scholarships
  3. To provide partial expense reimbursement for graduate students attending professional meetings
  4. To provide honoraria to visiting experts for on-campus presentations

When awarding any financial support, only the above four provisions may be considered, and per the explanations found below. The endowment provisions listed herein are in the order of the respective award consideration priority levels.

1. PARTIAL EXPENSE REIMBURSEMENT FOR MASTER'S THESIS, DOCTORAL DISSERTATION, OR OTHER RESEARCH PROJECT COMPLETION is the first priority of this endowment. It will be awarded by a committee within the Department to carefully chosen student(s) who are doing bona fide research in an area related to exercise science, fitness, health, or nutrition. The student(s) must be currently enrolled at SDSU and in good standing in the Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences. The award may never exceed 50% of the verified total research expenses.

The reimbursable expenses may include direct research expenses only, such as supplies, special equipment purchase or equipment repair, and medical supervision. Items not supported by this particular provision include ancillary expenses such as SDSU student enrollment fees (available only through the second provision of the endowment), living expenses, and personal expenses. Additional research publication fees (not including reprint costs) may be considered to encourage publication of the research provided the manuscript has been accepted for publication in a peer review research journal within two (2) years of graduation, and the student is listed as the first author. The intent to publish the research, along with the anticipated publication fees, should be part of the original application for this provision of the endowment. Subsequent actual reimbursement for publication fees will not be granted until proof of acceptance is submitted to the Department Chair, and must be preceded by the declaration of intent to publish.

2. PARTIAL GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS are the second priority of this endowment. These scholarships will be awarded by a committee within the Department to carefully chosen Master's and/or Doctoral student(s). The award winner(s) must be currently enrolled at SDSU and in good standing in the Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences and doing bona fide graduate study in applied or basic science areas related to the study of exercise science, fitness, health, or nutrition. This award is not available to first semester graduate students.

Master's degree candidates: The award can be for up to three (3) semesters, equivalent to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th school semesters. In special cases, a student may re-apply for a 4th and final semester award, equivalent to the 5th school semester .

Doctoral degree candidates: The award can be for up to five (5) semesters, equivalent to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th school semesters. In special cases, a student may re-apply for a 7th and final semester award, equivalent to the 8th school semester.

The award may never exceed 50% of the verified total costs of required SDSU enrollment fees per semester. Awards shall be paid semester by semester, with no payments being made for more than one semester at a time, regardless of the numbers of semesters covered by the award.

3. PARTIAL REIMBURSEMENT FOR PROFESSIONAL MEETING ATTENDANCE is the third priority of this endowment. It will be awarded by a committee within the Department to carefully chosen graduate student(s) to attend bona fide out-of-town professional meetings related to their area of study in exercise science, fitness, health, or nutrition. Presenters shall be given first priority consideration and non-presenters shall be given second priority consideration. Requests from students closer to graduation will be given higher priority consideration than students further from graduation.
The student(s) must be currently enrolled at SDSU and in good standing in the Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences. The award will never exceed 50% of the verified total expense of meeting registration, travel, and accommodation (not to include meals, entertainment, telephone, tips, etc.). Because of the timing of the meeting and graduation, the actual award (via reimbursement) may occur shortly after the student graduates and is no longer enrolled at SDSU.

4. HONORARIA FOR VISITING EXPERTS is the fourth priority of this endowment. It will be available for recognized experts in fields related to exercise science, fitness, health, or nutrition, to be on campus at SDSU to meet with and/or present to students in the Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences. The Department Chair and majority approval by the committee within the Department can approve/disapprove these requests as they come up during the year.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Qualified students must file a separate and distinct application for each of the first three provisions of this endowment: 1) thesis/dissertation/other research completion, 2) scholarship, or 3) meeting attendance. An award to a student of one provision of this endowment will not disqualify that student's eligibility for consideration of either one or both of the remaining two provisions. The student applicant must have a faculty sponsor from within the Department who will review the application, make a statement of recommendation, and co-sign on behalf of applicant.

The honoraria requests for visiting experts will be made by separate and distinct application by the Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences' faculty.

SELECTION PROCEDURES
The Department Faculty Selection Committee will be made up of Department faculty members chosen by the Department. The Endowment Development Committee will be made up of those individuals so named below, and any successors so designated by the committee or its chair .

The Department Faculty Selection Committee will meet at least twice each year shortly following application deadlines. However, due to any unusual or unforeseen circumstances, the selection committee occasionally may have to meet more often to accommodate the needs of students and the Department.

A presentation ceremony will be conducted at least annually by the Department to present the awards and/or recognize the endowment award recipients for that year. In addition to other invitees, Dr. and Mrs. Frederick W. Kasch, all surviving development committee members, their guests, and endowment donors will be invited to attend.

ENDOWMENT MANAGEMENT
An understandable level of flexibility must be given to the Department, the Department Faculty Selection Committee, and the selection process in order to best administer the provisions of this endowment.

The available funds from the endowment will be made up of earned interest only and the principal amount of the fund shall not be used, thereby ensuring that the endowment will continue on in perpetuity. Any unused portion of available earned interest in any given period will be returned to the principal amount to further the account growth.
