Summer 2003 course descriptions
E549 Topics in English Literature: 21st Century British Film, Photography, Art, Theatre and LiteratureOur rapid-paced tour of the contemporary aesthetic pulse of London and Great Britain will feature film screenings at NFT @ BFI, visits to West End theatres, exhibits at the British Library, and long tours of the British museum. Our goal? to firmly, rigorously and raucously sample all that is presently HOT in UK arts. There will be a journal assignment as well as art/lit/theater projects/performances and, perhaps, a silly exam.
E 724 Seminar: Topics in English Literature: 21st Century British Film, Photography, Art, Theatre and Literature Dr. William A. Nericcio
Same as e549 but with a longer, onerous and utterly more daunting essay requirement as is to be expected of long-suffering graduate students.General Studies 450: British Life and Culture Dr. John Makey
A weekly seminar that aims to immerse students in the life, culture, politics, and history of LONDON and the UK.E798 and E499: Special Study Courses Dr. William A. Nericcio
One, two and three-unit courses designed by students in conjunction with Dr. Nericcio; past courses/projects have included: Theatre in London Today; British Art, Then and Now; Comparative Museum Analysis; Parliament: An Insider's View; etc. Students are encouraged to develop their own special studies in conjunction with internships.
OLD meeting details ARCHIVE Why study in London with SDSU English and Comparative Literature Summer 2003
The Chair of the Department of English and Comparative Literature and the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Letters in consultation with the San Diego State University Administration, have GREENLIGHTED an inaugural Summer 2003 London Program. The program official dates are from June 22, 2003 to August 20, 2003. The Department of English and Comparative Literature Summer Program will be run in conjunction with the Foundation for International Education (FIE) located in the heart of London, England. All sorts of key information about FIE-hosted programs are available at their main website:
Up front, there are three great things about this summer study abroad opportunity:
1. ALL your units (up to 6) will be processed through the regular SDSU REGline system--meaning you get to study abroad without any of the headaches associated with getting SDSU to accept units from other institutions; AND, FIE offers summer internship opportunities all over LONDON, for students in ALL fields, so you get real-world international experience (that will NEVER look bad on a resumé) AND units toward graduation to boot.
2. London! One of the greatest cities on the face of the planet.
3. Kensington! FIE has its classrooms and residential life facilities in one of the swankest areas of London adjacent to cool museums, great art galleries, hot pubs and chic night spots.
What's NOT so great? Well, it is a tad expensive. While the final cost for the program will depend on the number of students that travel with our group, you are still looking at a little over $4700 + airfare + SDSU student fees for our adventure. But, because you are registered as an SDSU student, you are eligible for financial aid as you would be in a regular semester. These fees INCLUDE:
- Student housing
- Orientation
- Greater LONDON Tube pass
- Co-curricular activity program
- Imperial College Union membership
- Insurance
- A British Life and Culture class taught by the one and only Dr. John Makey, British Prof extraordinaire, which features outings to cool sites all over London and personal encounters with leading UK actors, celebrities and movers and shakers
- Use of Foundation services, facilities and resources
