The EMC's Entrepreneur Internship program was originally established in 1998 with a grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation for Entrepreneurial Leadership. The program places talented and motivated MBA students with emerging growth companies, venture capital firms and service organizations to foster entrepreneurial initiatives. Host companies gain talented employees while providing students exposure to real-life situations that can't be taught in the classroom.

MBA and MSBA students that have completed core curriculum undergo a formal application process to indicate past work experience, relevant skills and entrepreneurial areas of interest. Organizations submit candidate resumes to identify internship opportunities where a particular strategy development, project or process has entrepreneurial context or scope. Once both students and organizations fulfill requirements to participate in the program, companies review intern applications and conduct interviews to identify ideal intern candidates. After an intern accepts an offer from a host company, semester internships typically commence immediately and summer internships commence by June 15th. Host organizations are expected to contribute toward the intern's compensation. At the conclusion of a 150-hour internship, entrepreneur interns must complete an analytical report detailing their experiences.
