San Diego State Team Takes First Prize
 EnviroBinz, a new venture business for students representing San Diego State University, swept through the recent Venture Challenge, winning first place in the overall competition, as well as taking second place in the social innovation category and receiving a Golden Phone award. Carolina Enayati and Prabakar Mahalingam, representatives of EnviroBinz at the competition, walked away with a total of $16,500 in prize money. Envirobinz describes itself as "a socially responsible advertising company with an objective to help communities and cities divert waste from landfills by increasing recycling. [Our] aesthetically designed receptacles are installed at high pedestrian traffic locations, for high impact, eye level advertising, secured by long term contracts with the cities."
Venture Challenge 2006, the 17th annual international new venture competition hosted by the Entrepreneurial Management Center, took place on March 23rd and 24th at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley. Teams representing twenty universities from across the country and around the world presented their new business venture plans to a panel of judges made up of distinguished businesspeople and successful entrepreneurs.
Second place in this year's competition went to Quanlight, which "provides a novel yellow-red light-emitting diodes (LED) technology with an order of magnitude increase in lumens per dollar." Quanlight represented the University of California, San Diego. Rounding out this year's winners was the University of Oregon, with FloraGenetics. "Applying breakthrough genetic technology to ancient plant breeding methods, FloraGenetics will transform this process by offering plant breeders genetic fingerprints to make selection decisions years sooner."

SDSU Entrepreneurship Program Ranks 22nd in Latest US News & World Report Graduate School Guide
San Diego State University’s entrepreneurship program ranked 22nd in the US News & World Report’s “America’s Best Graduate Schools” 2007 edition (appearing in the April 10th, 2006 issue of the magazine), up from 26th in 2005.
“We’re thrilled that our entrepreneurship program continues to be recognized by our peers as one of the best in the nation,” said Gail Naughton, dean of SDSU’s College of Business Administration. “Our faculty and staff work very hard to ensure our students have the best educational programs and experiential opportunities. Also, the private support we receive for our Entrepreneurial Management Center gives us an extra margin of excellence in our research, curriculum and outreach.”

| ES Visits Stone Brewing Co.
 Members of the SDSU Entrepreneur Society recently visited the Stone Brewing corporate headquarters and new restaurant facility in Escondido. The students met with Greg Koch, CEO, and Chris Cochran, marketing director, and got a chance to learn first-hand about starting up a new venture and the benefits and challenges that come with the experience. Greg Koch had previously taken part in the EMC Bookmark This series on December 3rd, 2006.

| Andy Kay of Kay Computers Talks to the EMC
 Andy Kay, founder of Kaypro Corp. and current owner of Kay Computers, will be speaking at the Entrepreneurial Management Center on Thursday, April 20th from 12 noon to 1:30 pm. Kay will discuss how he grew Kaypro into the world's third largest computer manufacturer during the 1980s, recognizing new opportunities, and the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship.

| RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF OPPORTUNITIES: A CONVERSATION WITH SERIAL ENTREPRENEUR JOHN THORNTON.
The EMC Business Forum recently hosted serial entrepreneur John Thornton. The event took place Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006 at The Hilton Torrey Pines in La Jolla. Thornton spoke on a variety of topics, including starting up several companies while working for the Rohr Corporation in the 1950s; his time as President and Chairman of the Board at Wavetek, a small electronic instrument company; and how he came to be the largest stockholder of Micom Systems, helping the company grow from revenues of $400,000 to $240,000,000 in only twelve years.

| H2O Audio, founded by SDSU alum Kristian Rauhala (CEO), Carl Pettersen (VP of Engineering), and Rany Polany (Chief of Operations), recently appeared at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The CES, held this year from January 5th - 8th, is "the world's largest annual tradeshow for consumer technology and America's largest annual tradeshow of any kind."
