Welcome Back!
First, welcome to the first issue of The Dagger's Edge! You'll find all the news we could scrounge up. If you have any information you think needs to be in here, let Brian know since he's the editor of the Newsletter.
Membership Drive
Second, we need members! That's right, it's time for our Membership Drive. We'll be having the booth out by the benches September 5-8, 11 and boy do we have a deal for you. Sign up for a year and snag a T-shirt for only $17! Feel there's not enough room in your closet for another piece of clothing? Then just take the year's membership for $14. Don't feel like making such a long commitment but still want to look smart and in fashion? Then try the semester's membership with a tee for $12. No closet space and no time? Take just the semester's membership for just $9. And here's the real special deal. If you were a member before and have a friend who has never been a member, sign up together and we'll take $3 off both your yearly memberships! What a deal! (OK, Brian...calm down...it's just a membership drive...give the exclamation point key a rest.)
And while you're at it, show us how much you care about being a
member of S&D by helping to work the Membership Booth. Sign up on
the sheet posted on the Skull and Dagger board
The Students Are Going!
Remember the Russians? How they came? Well, now we're going! SDSU is sponsoring a group of students to go play the Maxim Gorky in Vladivostok, Russia and we need your help to finance the trip. We've got some funky coupon books you can buy or, if that doesn't float your boat, you can help sell them over at the FTX Bookstore on the 28th, 5pm till midnight. Contact Sheila or sign up on the list on the Skull and Dagger board.
Meetings
Skull and Dagger will be changing the general meeting day from Wednesday to Monday for two reasons. One is that we hope to get some more of the Graduate students to come to the meetings. The other is that Production meetings are on Wednesdays. So, to accommodate this diverse group, we've decided to move the meetings to Mondays...except the first one which will be on Wednesday, September 6 (see below) since nobody knows about the switch to Mondays yet.
Party!
But what does Skull and Dagger do? We have meetings! We have parties! We have meetings about parties! And we're having not one but two! The first is on Wednesday, September 6 from noon to 1pm at Scripps Cottage. Come eat the food, hear the music, and meet the rest of Skull and Dagger. The second is that Saturday, September 9 at Ski Beach. We're starting at 3pm and going till nobody wants to be there anymore. Burgers and chips are on us, everything else is up to you. So bring a beverage of your choice to drink at your leisure. We'll be building a bonfire when it gets dark and cools down because it's fun to watch things burn. See ya there!
Submissions
Skull and Dagger also has this bizarre mission to serve the Theatre community of SDSU. We put on a series of One Acts in the Fall and a Full Length Play in the Spring. We need your submissions! Let us know what shows you want to see. Drop off your thoughts in either Dan's or Patrick's box up in the Drama Department Office or in person. Deadlines for One Acts is September 25 while the Full Length deadline is coming up in November...we'll let you know.
Trivia Contest
And the Trivia Contest has been revamped to be Theatre Quotes. Dust off your copies of Shakespeare, Congreve, Miller, and Sondheim... Weekly winners get a half-pound of coffee (or other coffee product) from Starbucks while the Skull and Dagger member with the most number of correct answers at the end of the semester wins two tickets to Sea World! Doesn't that just make your heart go pitter-pat? Tell Production Manager Rick he's a swell guy!
Department Meeting
The Department Meeting is on August 30th at noon in the
Experimental Theatre. Meet the faculty, staff, the
rest of the student body, find out what they do, what shows we're doing
this
And now a word from our President, Dan McLellan:
Well, here we are at the beginning of another school year and for the first time in a long time, I am actually excited about the passing of summer and the arrival of the Fall semester. The 1995-96 Skull and Dagger board members have met for the last five weeks to plan for the upcoming year. As your president, I am confident that this year will offer several fun and exciting opportunities. Once again, Skull and Dagger will have a night of One Acts in the Fall semester and a Full Length production in the Spring. And through the year, we will bring in professionals from various aspects of the entertainment field to discuss the opportunities that are available for theater students. Scheduled for September is playwright Barry Mann on the 11th and film and television casting director, Samuel Warren on the 18th.
As President of Skull and Dagger, I truly hope that friendships are developed amongst our members that last a lifetime. I believe that one of the keys of successful college experience is socializing (partying) with the people you work with on a daily professional level. So to get things off on the right foot, we will have a barbecue at Scripps Cottage for our first meeting on September 6th and an all day get-together at Ski Beach on September 9th.
I look forward to working with all of you in the upcoming year and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. If you can't find me, please drop a note in my box next to the Drama Office.
Sincerely,
Dan McLellan
