First Meeting
Everybody get set for our first meeting of the semester on Wednesday, the 14th of February. It's Valentine's Day and if you have nobody to be your Valentine, have somebody to be your Valentine, or hate the entire concept of such a day, come on down to the Skull and Dagger meeting. We won't do anything you don't want to do. Find out what we're planning for the coming months ahead, the Full Length, and a bunch of other stuff to be announced there.
New Board Member
Now that Kelly Ayers graduated and left our flock, we need a new Production Manager. That honor falls to Dan Lightman. Congratulate him when you see him.
Chester and Billy and An American Tragedy
As some of you may have noticed, there's an entire month of events surrounding the story of Chester Gillette and Grace "Billy" Brown. For those who may not know, they were the real-life people upon which Theodore Dreiser based his book, An American Tragedy, which Erwin Piscator adapted into the play SDSU is performing. There are speakers and lectures and, of course, the play coming up. It all starts this Friday, February 16 with a talk about Dreiser by Richard Lingeman and ends on Wednesday, March 27 with a "Public Discussion of Symposium Events." And, there will also be a screening of the more famous film to come out of story, A Place in the Sun (starring Elizabeth Taylor) on Sunday, March 17 at 2 pm (the flyer gives no information as to place, but since so much seems to be taking place in Smith Recital Hall, I've got a feeling this will, too. Check with those in higher places for more information.)
Too, our own Professor Terry O'Donnell and the MFA Musical Theatre students will be having a recital of music by Paul Dresser (Dreiser's brother) and other composers on Friday and Saturday, February 23 and 24 at 7:30 pm in the Experimental Theatre. Tickets are $8 for students. Call 594-2548 for details. The performance will include readings from the letters Billy wrote to Chester just days before she died. Given the circumstances of what Dreiser would do with the story, some of the music Dresser wrote is eerily coincidental.
More Mechanicals Needed
For those of you who missed it but want to get in on it, we still could use a few people to play the Mechanicals for An American Tragedy. We could use 6, but we've only got 3. If you are interested, contact Brian Evans at 697-7489 or leave a message in the Skull and Dagger Newsletter box in the Drama Department.
