Fifteenth Annual Adams Lecture, Fall 2007

Anthony Grafton
Henry Putnam University Professor of History, Princeton University
A Renaissance Vision of Time and Space:
Hartmann Schedel’s Nuremberg Chronicle
3:30 Monday afternoon, October 29, Aztec Athletics Center

Hartmann Schedel’s Chronicle—an immense and splendidly illustrated history of the world published in 1493—has always been admired but rarely read. Yet it is a fascinating book, an interdisciplinary creation. This lecture will show how travel writing, historiography, and many other genres came together in Schedel’s hands and in his book to form a compelling Renaissance vision of the world, the past, and the future.

The John R. Adams Lecture in Humanities was inaugurated in 1993 through a grant and subsequent endowment by the late Professor Adams, former Chair of the Division of Humanities. A version of each lecture is subsequently published by the Department for selective distribution. Now available: Thomas Forrest Kelly, Harvard University, The Disastrous Premiere of The Rite of Spring. CLICK FOR COPIES.
