Newspaper Homework 4

 

Due 3/9/06 (Thursday before the spring recess)

 

1. For the Germany/France reading (p. 54, e-text and annotation also online), do the following:

 

a.      Simplify the piece by deleting all elements that are modifiers, be it time, place, manner, verbal or nominal, anything that is not absolutely necessary for the sentence to remain a sentence (some modifiers may need to be kept for some of the sentences to make sense).  You should first read the Reduction, Expansion and Packaging Handout and its Key to get some practice on simpler sentences. 

b.      Compare the two character versions and list all the characters that have simplified and traditional versions by handwriting them out.

c.      find all the abbreviations and give their full versions.

d.       list all the written style expressions and give their spoken counterparts.

 

2. For the Powell reading (the second piece on p. 57, e-text and annotation also online), do the following:

 

  1. translate the piece into English.
  2. find all the abbreviations and give their full versions.
  3.  list all the verbs used for expressing opinions and stating point of views and their pronunciation and meaning
  4.  list all the written style expressions and give their spoken counterparts

 

3. Find three headlines having to do with international affairs and translate them into non-headline language.
