Dr. Zuoya CAO got her Ph.D in Comparative Literature from The Pennsylvania State University. She had taught Chinese language and literature at Whittier College, Lincoln University and The American University before coming to SDSU. Her publication includes two scholarly books, Out of the Crucible: Literary Works About the Rusticated Youth and The Internal and External: The Artistic Use of Natural Imagery in English Romantic and Chinese Classic Poetry , as well as a novel in Chinese titled The Fragrant Grass.

Professor Ruey-Jiuan Regina Wu received a Master's degree in TESOL from the University of Washington, and a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from UCLA. Prior to joining SDSU in 1999, Professor Wu taught English in Taiwan and Mandarin Chinese at UCLA and the University of Washington. Professor Wu's research centers on naturalistic study of language use. Her research interests include conversation analysis, pragmatics, functional linguistics, language typologies, language assessment, language pedagogy, and teaching methodologies. Her recent book, Stance in Talk: A conversation analysis of Mandarin final particles(2004, John Benjamins), explores how participants in Mandarin conversation display stance in the unfolding development of action and interaction through the use of two Mandarin final particles, and is one of the pioneering CA studies of Mandarin Chinese. Catherine Yi-yu Cho Woo, Ed.D.

Professor Woo received her Ed. D from University of San Francisco in 1980. She was with the Chinese language program from its inception, being the first Chinese language faculty on campus. Her areas of expertise are the arts, culture and literature of China. Her art works are displayed in many museums and galleries across the nation and overseas. She has authored and co-authored a number of books of poetry and works on Chinese poetry. In addition to teaching Chinese language courses, she also teaches a course on Chinese painting and calligraphy in the Art Department. She serves on a number of national committees. She is a frequent invited speaker on Chinese arts and culture on many university and college campuses nationwide.

Zheng-sheng Zhang, Ph.D.

Professor Zhang received his Ph.D in 1988 from Ohio State University, where he was trained in theoretical linguistics. He joined the Chinese program in the fall of 1990. His research interests include linguistic structure of the Chinese language, Chinese language pedagogy and computer-aided language instruction. Since his arrival, he has been actively involved in curriculum development and with the Language Acquisition Resource Center. In addition to teaching general language courses, he also teaches the upper division special purpose courses such as Aspects of the Chinese Language, Business Chinese and Newspaper Chinese.
