General Language Courses

Chinese 101: Elementary Chinese [I], 5 hours Five lectures and one hour of lab work.

Prerequisite: none.

Rudiments of Mandarin pronunciation; listening, speaking, reading and writing, with emphasis on communicative ability; acquisition of the most useful phrases, vocabulary items and over 250 characters; familiarity with basic sentence structures of Mandarin; information on Chinese culture. Not open to students who have completed three years of high school Chinese unless the third course was completed five or more years ago.

Chinese 102: Elementary Chinese [II], 5 hours

Five lectures and one hour of lab work.

Prerequisite: Chinese 101.

Continuation of Chinese 101. Acquisition of an additional 250 characters. Not open to students who have completed three years of high school Chinese unless the third course was completed five or more years ago.

Chinese 201: Intermediate Chinese [I], 5 hours

Five lectures and one hour of lab work.

Prerequisite: Chinese 102 or equivalent.

Developing facility to comprehend and produce spoken Chinese, with emphasis on connected discourse. Acquisition of advanced language points and 250 or more characters.

Chinese 202: Intermediate Chinese [II], 5 hours

Prerequisite: Chinese 201 or equivalent.

Continuation of Chinese 201.

Chinese 301: Advanced Chinese [I], 3 hours

Prerequisite: Chinese 202 or equivalent.

Facility in oral expression and writing in practical genres; introduction to features of written Chinese; exposure to various styles of the language; acquaintance with newspaper and media Chinese, elements of literary classical language, additional 500 or more Chinese characters. It is offered regularly once a year.

Chinese 302: Advanced Chinese [II], 3 hours

Prerequisite: Chinese 301 or equivalent.

Continuation of Chinese 301.

It is offered regularly once a year.

Special Purpose Courses:

Chinese 433, Newspaper Chinese, 3 hours

Prerequisite: Chinese 302 or approval of the instructor.

Developing facility in the reading of Chinese newspapers by focusing on the special linguistic characteristics of formal, written discourse. It is offered regularly once a year.

Chinese 434, Business Chinese, 3 hours

Prerequisite: Chinese 302 or equivalent.

Developing ability to function in the Chinese business environment; familiarity with business correspondence, telecommunication, advertising, business terminology and stylistic features, information on intercultural communication and social, cultural background. It is offered regularly once a year.

The following special purpose/enrichment courses are offered some semesters, when resources permit:

Chinese 351, Introduction to Classical Chinese, 3 hours

Prerequisite: Chinese 302 or equivalent.

This course introduces the grammatical structure and vocabulary of Classical Chinese through reading selected passages from the classics.

Chinese 352, Aspects of Chinese language, 3 hours [in English]

Prerequisite: a course in Chinese, linguistics or anthropology.

This is a course taught in English about the Chinese language. It does not presuppose nor teach Chinese language skills, but rather introduces the most important linguistic, historical, social aspects concerning the Chinese language.

Chinese 431, Advanced Conversational Chinese, 3 hours

Prerequisite: Chinese 302 or approval of the instructor.

Emphasis on the spoken language; discussion on practical, social and cultural topics, with the aid of spoken language materials such as plays and videotapes; learning conversational strategies and the stylistic features of conversation.

Chinese 450: Readings in Chinese Civilization, 3 hours

Prerequisite: Chinese 302 or equivalent.

This is an introduction to topics in Chinese civilization through selected readings. It is taught in Chinese.

Chinese 451: Readings in Modern Chinese Literature, 3 hours

Prerequisite: Chinese 302 or equivalent.

This is an introduction to modern Chinese literature through selected readings. It is taught in Chinese.
