Dialogue I

(Li You is on the phone with her teacher.)

Li You: Hello, is Teacher Wang in?

Teacher Wang: This is he. Who is this, please?

Li You: Teacher, how are you. This is Li You.

Teacher Wang: Li You, how are you. What is going on?

Li You: Teacher, are you free this afternoon? I'd like to ask you a few questions.

Teacher Wang: I'm sorry. This afternoon I have to go to a meeting.

Li You: What about tomorrow?

Teacher Wang: Tomorrow morning I have two classes. Tomorrow afternoon at three

o'clock I have to give an exam to the second-year class.

Li You: When you will be free?

Teacher Wang: I won't be free until after four o'clock tomorrow.

Li You: If it's convenient with you, I'll go to your office at four-thirty. Is that all

right?

Teacher Wang: Four-thirty? No problem. I'll wait for you in my office.

Li You: Thank you.

Teacher Wang: You're welcome.

Li You and Wang Peng are talking on the phone.)

Li You: Hello, is Wang Peng there?

Wang Peng: This is he. Is this Li You? What's up?

Li You: I'd like to ask you for a favor.

Wang Peng: Don't be so polite. What is it?

Li You: Next week I have a Chinese exam. Could you help me practice speaking

Chinese?

Wang Peng: Sure, but you must buy me a coffee.

Li You: Buy you a coffee? No problem. Are you free this evening?

Wang Peng: This evening someone is taking me to dinner. I don't know when I'll be

back. Why don't I call you after I get back?

Li You. O.K. I'll wait for your call.
