Lesson 18
Narrative
Wang Peng has been living in the dorm for one semester so far. He feels that the
dorm is too noisy, and he cannot sleep well. The room is too small. There is not even
room for a computer, nor is there a place for him to cook. He feels that the dorm is very
inconvenient, so he plans to move out next semester. He has been looking for a place for over a week, but has not found anything yet. This morning he saw an ad in the newspaper which says that there is an apartment near the school for rent. It is very convenient, only about one mile from school. The apartment has a bedroom, a kitchen7 a bathroom, a living room, and also comes furnished. Wang Peng feels that that place will probably suit him fine.
Dialogue
Wang Peng: Hello' you have a room for rent, right?
Landlord: Yes. A bedroom with a living room, furnished.
Wang Peng: What kind of furniture?
Landlord: There is a set of sofas, and a dining table with four chairs in the living
room. There is a single bed, a desk and a bookshelf in the bedroom.
Wang Peng: Is it quiet where you are?
Landlord: Very quiet.
Wang Peng: How much is the monthly rent?
Landlord: Four hundred and fifty dollars.
Wang Peng: How much are the water and electric bills?
Landlord: You wouldn't have to pay for water or electricity.
Wang Peng Would I have to pay a deposit?
Landlord: Yes, you'd have to pay an additional month's rent as deposit which will be
returned to you when you move out. Oh, pets are not allowed in the apartment.
Wang Peng: I don't keep any pets.
Landlord: That's great. Why don't you come and take a look this afternoon?
Wang Peng: All right.
