Lesson 17

Dialogue I

Wang Peng and Li You go to the same school. They have known each other for

about three months now. Wang Peng often helps Li You practice speaking Chinese. Last

week they went to Little Lin's birthday party and had a good time. Li You has a very

good impression of Wang Peng. Wang Peng likes Li You very much, too. They have

become good friends.

Wang Peng: This weekend they are showing a new movie at school. Shall we go and see

it together?

Li You: What movie?

Wang Peng: A Chinese movie, To Live.

Li You: Great, but I have heard that many people are going to see it. Will we be

able to get any tickets?

Wang Peng: I've already got the tickets. It took me a lot of trouble to get those.

Li You: Fantastic. I've wanted to see the movie for a long time. Will anyone else be

going with us?

Wang Peng: No, just the two of us.

Li You: All right. When?

Wang Peng: 8:00 p.m. the day after tomorrow.

Li You: I'll take you to dinner before the movie.

Wang Peng: Great. It’s a deal.

Dialogue II

Bai Jianming: Hello, is Miss Li You there?

Li You: This is she. Who is this, please?

Bai Jianming: I’m Bai Jianming. Do you remember me?

Li You: Bai Jianming?

Bai Jianming: Do you still remember Little Lin’s birthday party last week? I was the last one who asked you for a dance. Do you remember now?

Li You: I’m sorry. I don’t remember. How did you get my number?

Bai Jianming: I got it from Little Lin.

Li You: What can I do for you, Mr. Bai?

Bai Jianming: I’d like to invite you to go and see an opera with me. Will you be free this coming weekend?

Li You: No, not this weekend. I have three exams next week.

Bai Jianming: How about next weekend? After your exam, we can have a good celebration.

Li You: Next weekend won’t do, either. I have to help my mom clean the house and tidy up the rooms.

Bai Jianming: How about two weekends from now?

Li You: I’m sorry, two weekends from now is even worse. I’m traveling to New York with my boyfriend.

Bai Jianming: It doesn’t matter. Forget it, then.
