Lesson 15

Dialogue I

(Li You is taking to Wang Peng on the phone.)

Li You: Wang Peng, what are you doing?

Wang Peng: I'm reading.

Li You: Today is Little Lin's birthday. This evening we are having a party at Little

Lin's place. Can you come?

Wang Peng: When?

Li You: Seven o'clock. We'll eat first. After dinner we'll (then) sing and dance.

Wang Peng: Who will be going?

Li You: Little Lin's girlfriend, my cousin, and several classmates from our Chinese

class.

Wang Peng: What shall I bring? You know I can't cook.

Li You: Soda or some fruit will do.

Wang Peng: Then I'll bring some fruit juice.

Li You: You don't have a car. Shall I come and pick you up?

Wang Peng: That won't be necessary. My place (the place where I live) is not far from

Little Lin's. I'll walk. I can get some exercise.

Dialogue II

(At Little Lin's Place.)

Wang Peng: Little Lin, happy birthday!

Little Lin: Thank you. Wang Peng, please come in. Li You was asking me how come

you're not here yet.

Wang Peng: This is a birthday gift for you.

Little Lin: Oh, you shouldn't have (lit. you're being too polite.) I'm embarrassed.

Li You: Wang Peng, how come you just got here? Come on, let me introduce you

to each other. This is my cousin, Helen. This is her son, Tom.

Wang Peng: Hello, Helen.

Helen: Hello, Wang Peng. Li You often speaks of you. She says you are both

intelligent and diligent.

Wang Peng: That's very nice of her. You really speak very good Chinese. Where did

you learn it?

Helen: In summer school.

Wang Peng: Ah, Tom is really cute. Look, he's smiling. How old is he?

Helen: He was born two years ago, in the year of the dog. He'll be two next

month.

Little Lin: Look, he's got big eyes, and a high nose. His mouth is not too big, not

too small. He looks just like Helen. With such a beautiful mom, the son will

definitely be very handsome.

Elelen: They all say Tom's face is looking like mine, but when he smiles it really

resembles his father's.

Wang Peng: Tom has long legs. Certainly he will grow to be tall.

Li You: Look, Tom's got such long fingers. You should let him learn to play the
