It: A Guide to Promoting Children's Social and Language Development in Early
Childhood Settings (Weitzman, 1992), produced by the Hanen Centre, which
provides intervention to young children with language delays and is dedicated
to help children reach their potential as playmates, learners, and successful
communicators. Both guidebook and video offer guidelines and practical suggestions
to teachers for promoting interaction, language learning, and emergent literacy
in young children within everyday contexts. These include: 1) Getting every
child "in on the act"- observing, waiting, listening, and following
the child's lead; 2) Providing information to promote learning - labeling,
expanding, modeling, explaining, and describing; and 3) Letting language
leading the way to literacy, fostering a lifetime love of learning through
books.

Gentle Touch Infant Massage. Produced by Gentle Touch, Inc. (1996).
Available from Gentle Touch, Inc. P.O. Box 6007, Asheville, NC 28816. Tel:

Infant massage offers parents the opportunity to learn the many ways babies
communicate long before they are able to talk. This video begins with health
care professionals describing and discussing the power of touch and the
benefits of infant massage for children's healthy growth and development,
as well as the creation of a special bond between parent and child. The
tape illustrates various aspects of massage, including finding the best
time for massage, positioning, soothing techniques, and using massage with
babies with special needs. In three separate segments, the tape shows parents
(including a father) demonstrating massage routines appropriate for babies
at different developmental stages. Parents show respect for their babies
by asking permission to touch, reading nonverbal cues, and responding sensitively.
Viewers are encouraged to check with medical and therapeutic specialists
before massaging a baby.
