WHAT'S NEW?

SignUp for CFD 375-376: We will no longer have the preliminary signup for CFD375/376L as we have had in past semesters. If you'll check the Schedule Book , you'll notice the schedule numbers are printed for the CFD375 lecture classes. This means you may register for these sections through RegLine. The schedule numbers for the labs are restricted. You will be given an add code the first day of the lecture class. Please be aware, you will still be required to present proof of completion of the prerequisites for your major. Therefore, please be prepared to have these with you the first day of class. Failure to produce proof of completion of the prequisites will result in your being asked to drop this course.

The administrative offices for the Department of Child and Family Development are located in PSFA-413, 4th floor of Professional Studies and Fine Arts Building.

Graduate seminars are held in the Seminar/Conference room in PSFA-453. Members of our CFD Interdisciplinary Graduate Faculty Committee will be giving presentations to our graduate students at a brown bag lunch. Specific days and times for these will vary from semester to semester. You may contact the department office at (619)594-5380 for a specifics.

The Francine Deutsch Book Awards foundation account has been established to assist financially eligible undergraduates with the purchase of required text. If you wish to make a contribution to this worthy scholarship, your check should be made out to the foundation account and forwarded to the CFD Office. Any contribution made to this foundation account is tax deductible.

Many excellent part-time faculty, drawn from the professional community in San Diego, have joined the department. The department continues to advertise for new part-time faculty to include in our part-time faculty pool. The Department of Child and Family Department announces a new 2003-2004 Tenure Track position in Early Childhood Education pending final budget approval. Expected responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in early childhood education, infant toddler development, adult supervision and administration in child development programs serving diverse populations. The courses taught by this position comprise the Child Development Specialist emphasis that allow students to meet requirements for the State of California Child Development Permits. Community based lab experiences in the San Diego area provide students with a wide variety of exposure to persons of various ethnic and racial backgrounds. San Diego's geographic location and diverse population make the area a dynamic international hub. Our student body and surrounding community create opportunities for a variety of social and cultural activities. It is expected that the candidate would also conduct research, supervise master's theses and serve on university and community committees.

The position requires the Ph.D. degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development and experience in an early childhood setting is required. The candidate must demonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service. Experience and commitment to programs serving diverse populations and interdisciplinary programs are required.

The position is at the Assistant Professor level. The salary is negotiable and depends on education and experience.

The Department of Child and Family Development has 5 full-time faculty with approximately 350 majors enrolled in the undergraduate program and 19 students enrolled in the interdisciplinary graduate master's program. The undergraduate program has three areas of specializations, including Child Development, Family Development, and General Child and Family Development. The interdisciplinary master's program is a 30 unit program with a thesis. Twenty-two faculty from 20 different departments across campus make up the interdisciplinary graduate committee who teach courses in the program and serve as chairs and members of the theses committees.

The Child and Family Student Organization/Council on Family Relations is an organization made up of students of diverse backgrounds, who have a love for kids, a passionate concern for the welfare of children and their family, are dedicated to community outreach through sharing their knowledge and their hearts, who sponsor educational symposiums that allow an indepth exploration of critical issues facing children and the family in our society, and who participate in conferences on Child and Family issues that allow it's members to exchange ideas with leading professionals and students from across the country . This organization offers members a support network of like-minded students; providing a forum for the exchange of knowledge, opinions, and ideas on topics relevant to child and family studies. The CFSO/CFR meet twice a month and meeting times and club events are posted on their bulletin board on the 4th floor of PSFA, across from Room 467. Come join the fun!!

Undergraduate Advising: Dr. Carolyn Balkwell, our Undergraduate Advisor, sees undergraduate students for academic advising on a walk-in basis. However, Dr. Balkwell posts her available times on her voicemail and you should first call to determine availability prior to coming into the office. Sometime in the near future, we'd like to host a Career Day for current SDSU Child and Family Development majors, bringing to campus a variety of our alums currently working in the field to talk about their jobs, professional growth opportunities, and lend their perspective to current undergraduates. The M.S. in Child Development is just completing its seventh year. Twenty-two graduate students are completing their degree and are being advised by Dr. Thomas Roberts, Graduate Advisor. Several of the graduate students teach in the department (CFD 135, 271, 371).
