Graduate Application Procedures Department of Child and Family Development

(Fall 2003)

Applying to SDSU is a two-step process as detailed below:

Step 1: Apply to the University
You are required to submit the CSU application form to the SDSU office of Graduate Admissions. In order to expedite the processing of your application, you may go to the online application and submit both application and the $55 fee online (http:/ /www.csumentor.org/).

Paper application forms may be obtained from the department, or Graduate Admissions (SSI520), or on any CSU campus, and submitted to:

Step 2: Apply to the Department
Assemble one complete admissions packet, which should include the following:
1) Two sets of original and official transcripts of all previous academic work attempted.

You must submit 2 sets of official transcripts in sealed envelopes from each issuing institution. This would include all degree transcripts and a transcript from the last institution attended. Your transcripts must reflect the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units attempted.

Students with international coursework must submit all official transcripts and proofs of degree. If certificates and transcripts are not in English, they should be accompanied by certified English transactions.

2) Three letters of recommendation from professionals who can attest to your promise as a graduate student and professional educator. If you have not been in an academic environment for several years, you may wish to have an employer complete one of your recommendations. Your recommendations should accompany your application unopened. Download Letter of Recommendation form.

3) A statement of professional goals, typed on a separate sheet of paper. This is your opportunity to describe your special characteristics or skills and to articulate how your goals are compatible with the program to which you are applying.

4) Graduate Record Exam (Verbal & Quantitative) scores are to be sent directly to SDSU from The Educational Testing Service. The correct institution number for San Diego State University is 4682.

In summation, the Fall 2003 graduate application deadline is May 1, 2003. In order to ensure consideration, you must have all the application materials to both the Office of Graduate Admissions and the department by the deadline.

Advancement to Candidacy:
All students must satisfy the general requirements for advancement to candidacy, as described in Part Two of the Graduate Bulletin, have identified a thesis research adviser, taken CFD 790 with a grade of B or better, and have had their research proposals approved by their committees.
