FACULTY-STAFF CHILDREN'S CENTER
594-7941
Finding quality child care and preschool programs are top concerns among working parents with young children. The Faculty-Staff Children's Center provides a relaxed and loving atmosphere in which children are free to explore, learn and create. Activities are planned to provide maximum physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth. Another goal is to help children learn appropriate ways of getting along with others. The San Diego State University Faculty-Staff Children's Center operated by the Associated Students is designed to serve the needs of faculty and staff of the campus with children from 2 years to 6 years of age who are in good health. It is governed by the Associated Students Children's Center Board, which is composed of parents and staff interested in the center. It is one of three campus children center sites. The other two primarily serve students.

Located close to campus at 4976 Curry Drive, there are three classrooms to accommodate the needs of two year old, three year old, and four year old children. The facility is licensed by the State Department of Social Services. The staff consists of a manager who oversees all three centers, a supervisor, teachers, and teaching assistants. The professional teachers possess current children center permits for working in programs for young children.

The center is available to everyone without regard to race, color, national origin, age, sex or handicap. Priority will be given to SDSU faculty and staff applicants requiring full time child care. A limited number of students are also given priority. SDSU students, alumni and local community members will be served if space is available

The center is open year round from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday. Closed on all official University holidays including the week of Winter break. The center provides breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack. Disposable diapers are provided for children who are not toilet trained. In addition to teachers, the center has support staff who help with the meals, naps, diaper and playground. Using positive direction and redirection, the children are shown what to do rather than what not to do. Learning to get along in their environment is emphasized. Parents are always welcome to observe, discuss policies, make suggestions, and participate in the work of the program.

Each classroom has a planned daily schedule which provides for a variety of age appropriate activities. Each week there is a "learning theme" to help the children discover more about themselves and their environment. Lesson plans and schedules are posted in each classroom to help keep parents informed about the child's day.

CHILD STUDY CENTER
A rich training experience for Child Development Majors and Liberal Studies Students
in a Child Development Specialization

In a collaborative effort with the Associated Students organization, the Department of Child and Family Development provides "hands-on" training to its students. Many of the Child and Family Development courses use the Campus Children's Centers and Faculty-Staff Children's Center for classroom laboratory experiences. In CFD 270 (Principles of Child Development) students have directed observations of children. In CFD 270L (Principles of Child Development Laboratory) they not only use directed observations but also learn multiple methods of recording individual and group behavior. In CFD 375/376L (Child Development Programs and the accompanying Laboratory Experiences in the Child Study Center) you will have directed experiences with children up to age five in a mainstreamed setting, study and participate in the designing and implementing of developmentally appropriate activities, learn communication techniques, basic skills and strategies for working with young children. The opportunities are endless!

A collaborative "Full Inclusion" program with the San Diego City Schools has been developed and provides a special needs teacher and bus transportation for preschoolers who have identified developmental disabilities or are at risk developmentally.

There is a a fully mainstreamed full inclusion program. We receive approximately $100,000 in-kind support from San Diego City Schools in the form of a Master's Level Special Education Teacher and peripheral support services and personnel. The rich training opportunity for students has also been expanded to include Liberal Studies students with a Specialization in Child Development.
