Alumni of the Department - Are They Working in the Field? The graduates of the Child and Family Development program have been quite successful in obtaining a variety of positions throughout the San Diego region as well as other parts of California and the nation. Many of the department's graduates have risen to high decision-making levels. This has helped the department to achieve high visibility in the community and to achieve a high level of integration with the professional community. In general, our alumni continue to contribute to the vitality and professional stature of SDSU.

As we reflect on our alumni list, a number of trends become apparent. First, that teaching as a profession has been a strong and continuous thrust of our program for the past two decades. A large number of our undergraduate students go on to complete a teaching credential with the B.S. in Child Development as their undergraduate degree preparation. We are strongly represented in elementary education, community colleges and universities. Our alumni are teaching throughout San Diego County and Southern California.

In addition, a great number of our alumni have risen to administrative roles in their careers: from positions as Director of Child Programs to Deans of Colleges. During the late 1980's and continuing into the 1990's we see evidence of a greater variety of professional positions. A diversification in response to economic trends and societal shifts has lead to increases in the number of our alumni assuming various agency roles, continuing with graduate work, and the developing highly creative child-related businesses.

We feel a great deal of pride in both our faculty and alumni. Our graduates are well prepared with a broad skill base of knowledge enabling them to make transitions to various private and public sectors in response to the shifting economic trends in society.

Denise Dale, M.S.Ed.
777 S. Main St., Suite 216
Orange, CA. 92668
Following my graduation from SDSU in December 95, I married and got a job working at American Pre-schools in my chosen field! While working, I obtained my clear teaching credential from U.C. Irvine. I then began teaching first grade at a private school, St. Pius V, in Buena Park. I taught first grade for 6 years, then moved on to fourth grade for a period of two years. While I was teaching at St. Pius, I was working on my masters degree at Cal State Fullerton. I received a Masters of Science in Reading and a Reading Specialists Credential from that institution. I then opened my reading clinic, Reading Horizons, in the city of Orange. I have now owned the company for 10 years. I find it to be very fulfilling and plan to continue with it in the future.

Career and work history: I completed my course work for my degree in Child Development in 1986 and continued with school to earn a Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential from SDSU in 1987. I have been working for the La Mesa/Spring Valley School District since the Fall of 1988. I am a kindergarten teacher at Kempton Street Elementary School and have been teaching there for the past nine years. I love being a kindergarten teacher! I did return to SDSU for a Masters degree in Education, which I completed in the Spring of 1992. I married another SDSU alumni in July of 1994 and we now have a son born in August of 1996.

I think it's great to see this department is still alive and well! When I finished my last semester, a hell summer of 18 units, I thought that President Day had made my degree in Child Development obsolete. It's nice to see it is valued. After graduating in '92, I moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area where I became a One-on-One Instructional Assistant in a Special Day Class for a little 8 year old girl that was severely mentally disturbed and a multiple personality. It was quite a challenge but well worth it. After a year and a half of Assisting, I thought it was time to take the lead. I became a Preschool and Afternoon Kindergarten Teacher at a school in San Fransico named Little Bear School. After a year and a half of that, I wanted more. I enrolled at Cal State Hayward and with in a year completed my Clear Credential and CLAD certificate. When I graduated, I felt the need to move once again. I landed near St. Helena in the Napa Valley. It is a beautiful valley full of potential.I am now just finishing my first year as a First Grade Teacher in Windsor, CA. I think I've finally found where I want to be. The staff is great and the students and families are wonderful. A SDSU Family Studies graduate can make it in this world without being a liberal studies major!

I was very excited to receive the announcement regarding the homepage in the mail. Looks great! Nice opportunity to have access to the roots of our education and to be able to network with other alumni. Great idea! Thank you!! I'm currently employed by the San Diego State University Foundation working as the Conditional Acceptance Student Advisor for the American Language Institute. I work with international students from over 150 countries helping them obtain acceptance to undergraduate and graduate programs from over 40 schools with which our institute has a conditional acceptance agreement. Unfortunately, as you can see, I've strayed somewhat from the field of Child Development, but the skills I've gained from counseling and advising have been tremendous. In addition to working full-time,I am also working on my graduate degree at Chapman University. Once I have completed the program, I will have a Master's in School Counseling with both a PPSC (Pupil Personnel Services/School Counseling Credential) and a PPSP (Pupil Personnel School Psychology Credential.) I am finding that my foundation in Child Development and my education received at San Diego State University has prepared me greatly for the career avenue I am now pursuing.

Hello Friends! Since graduation in May of 1996, I have been keeping very busy! I am a substitute teacher by day in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District, located in the San Francisco Bay Area. By night, I am going to grad school at Chapman University in order to earn my Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential and my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I have signed a contract with the Mt. Diable Unified School District and I am going to be teaching second grade at Hidden Valley Elementary School in Martinez, California beginning Sept. 97. This school stresses the developmental approach to education, so my degree in Child and Family Development is very useful. I think that the new homepage is an excellent way for us Alumni of the Child and Family Development Department to stay in touch! I really loved receiving information on the website in the mail. I would love to visit SDSU in order to be a speaker for other students at a job fair.

Greetings girls!!! Especially to everyone I sat in the back row with...I know you miss the noise we used to make. Not much has happened since I graduated. I am currently working on my Masters of Education in Counseling. The University of San Diego is a lot different than State, although not as fun. I should be finished (fingers crossed) in May 1998. Then its off to a Doctoral Program in...yup..you guessed Human Development. Looks like I couldn't get enough of this stuff. Trust me, you begin to miss those Balkwell papers. And Ritblatt's 590??? The most grueling class ever, yet also the most rewarding. Was it worth it?? You bet it was. My classmates at USD don't even know what the DSM is. Mind you, its even a Counseling Program. Pretty scary.... So you all can sleep better knowing that you were given a quality education from a quality program. All I can do is rant & rave about SDSU's CFD program. I miss it tremendously, especialy the friends I made. Please feel free to keep in touch, I love hearing from old friends. Especially Leila, Teyara, April, Thelma, Karen, or Kim. I'm sorry I lost touch with all of you. Even Beth, who kept me laughing all the time. We will always have that stupid UPC code joke. Good luck fellow CFD grads. I feel so lucky to have met all of you.

Ann Abeshima - Future plans: In July 97, I will be moving to Japan for one to two years to teach English to high school students. I will be a member of the Board Of Education there and help both the students and teachers learn conversational English and about the American culture. I am excited to have the opportunity to have this experience. If any alums are ever in the area, please contact me (not by phone, because I will not be able to afford my own phone line over there.) After my work there, Iwould really like to continue traveling (any one want to help me finance my dreams?) In the future, I look forward to coming back to San Diego State University to visit, but not to take anymore classes. I have gotten so much out of this school and have taken advantage of all the services available both in and out of the department. I would like to return to help other students benefit from their education here.

I am impressed with the Homepage. I particularly think that the alumni net is a great idea. I am now a grad student at Oregon State University; I would like to network with other grad students in your department. I spent the summer in England, working with children at a Christian School. It was a fantastic summer and I haven't quite adjusted to being back in America yet.

As I travel through the hallways of my life I will always look back on my college days and remember my days at San Diego State University. By having a home page on the Web, I will be able to keep in touch with the University and my fellow alumni and professors. I am so excited for the birth of the home page, it's about time our old fashioned department ("old" in technology, buildings and furniture) took the steps to advance itself and further the knowledge of uneducated people who think that all childcare/preschool teachers do is change diapers and be bottle warmers. NOT TRUE! A word to the wise for all you prospectives, if you ever thought that CFD590 took a lot of time (and $) (how many abstracts, journal articles and references do we need , Dr. Ritblatt?) but all you need is PATIENCE and TIME, the rest will fall into place. This department as small as it is, has grown so much in just the 4 years that I have been here. And yes, it is possible to graduate from college in 4 years, just take a lot of summer school and winter session!! So live large and remember it's not how much money you make, or the kind of cars that you drive, or the houses that you live in, but someday somewhere someone will remember you because you were their teacher! What am I planning to do?...move home and mooch off my mom and dad for 3 months and live RENT FREE (on their couch!!!) Then I am going to pack my belongings and move away, far away, to where the road splits and I have to choose which will be the Road Not Taken......

This is a great way to "network" so...I'm currently seeking "only-children" for my thesis. I need at least 150 only-children, 18 years and older. Research involves answering 4 simple questionnaires and an interview if you choose. I can be reached by e-mail at "matsuda@mail.sdsu.edu or 594-6371 my office number at SDSU. Since returning to SDSU after a 25-year "leave of absence" I have literally done nothing else but continue with my education. In the summer of '92 I returned to college, received my B.S. in Fall of 1995 while concurrently enrolled in the master's program. I hope to complete my thesis (on the only-child) in August 1997. Currently I am a T.A. at SDSU Department of Child and Family Development teaching 2 sections of CFD 135 (Marriage and the Family). I hope to continue on with my education with a goal of teaching at the community college and university level.

I am interested in talking with fellow CFD students about the company I am working for. If people are interested in work in Orange county I would even like to come talk to the student organization about it around December. My e-mail address is Missfedder@aol.com. Since I graduated in May 97, I moved home and have had 2 jobs. The first oneI did not like at all! I was working for the Irvine Child Development Center; the center sucked. Now I am working for a company called Continuing Development Incorprated. I am working at one of their school -aged sites in Tustin at a brand new center. It has been great so far, because we have been able to get all this new stuff. What I like most is I am going to be getting trained for a directors position-- so I cannot wait. If anyone is interested in working with school-aged children, it is before or after school care and in the Orange county area (also Ventura County and in Northern Califorina) You can e-mail me at Missfedder@alo.com.
