The clinical component requires a minimum of 2 years of clinical experience under the direct supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer. Athletic Training Students will gain experience with both men's and women's sports teams and will be exposed to a variety of sporting activities. Student's will also have the opportunity to complete the clinical hours at San Diego State University and other clinical sites around the community (i.e. University of San Diego, University of California at San Diego, San Diego Mesa Community College, Grossmont Community College).

The clinical program is available to students on a competitive application basis. The Athletic Training Clinical Program at SDSU currently covers all 17 varsity sports and 3 club sports at the 10 different sporting facilities. Each team is assigned athletic training student who may share in team travel as well as home coverage.

During the regular season a student may anticipate spending 20 hours/week in the training room. This includes, but not limited to, inservices, workshops, surgical observations, and opportunities to assist the physicians in daily clinic. The Future Athletic Trainers Society is a student run organization that provides additional resources for athletic training students.
