A disproportionate number of American Indian students are at risk
of not graduating from high school, and the number of American
Indians graduating from college is unnecessarily low. In an effort
to plant seeds for brighter futures through a college education,
a group of American Indian SDSU students in conjunction with the
Department of American Indian Studies, established the AIR (American
Indian Recruitment) program.
Qualifying students benefit from the weekly , two-hour on-campus
mentoring sessions consisting of workshops, such as team building
exercises that heighten cultural awareness, as well as discussions
and tutoring. The SDSU student staff gives campus tours and is
also able to share information about SDSU application requirements,
strategies to fulfill academic requirements, SDSU policies and
student support programs.
AIR Mentors
AIR mentors are SDSU alumni and alumni of other universities, or
SDSU students. Mentors are qualified to communicate study skills
and how to research a subject; orient students to the SDSU campus
and its services;explain the importance of preparing for college
as early as possible; provide tutoring; conduct workshops on
subjects such as health and society issues that may affect students
in college;and guide students in group interaction.
How to enroll in the program
To be considered for the AIR program, you must fill out and submit
an AIR application with your parents' or legal guardian's consent.
The application is the basis on which each applicant is evaluated.
Though exceptions may be made, applicants should currently be
enrolled high school students in grades 9-12. Please contact
the AIR Program to obtain an application.
