Forget-me-not

A Brief History of Our House

San Diego State had just celebrated its fiftieth anniversary when the local sororities became eligible for affiliation with the National Panhellenic Conference and began seeking congenial connections. In February, 1931, the college was moved to a new campus situated on the eastern outskirts of the city. The architecture was Spanish, with the liberty tower the prominent feature. The music of its chimes floated out over the adjoining quadrangle.

On the campus there were ten local sororities. Phi Kappa Gamma, now Alpha Phi, was the oldest of the nine Greek Letter groups and was founded on February 10, 1924. Eight girls who had been high school friends drew up a charter to seal that friendship with a lasting association.

Phi Kappa Gamma's first advisor and faculty sponsor was Miss Edith Hammask of the Educational Department. In 1935, Mrs. Leonard Ellis became their social sponsor. Fortunate in a group of excellent people to guide them, including their own alumnae, by 1928, Phi Kappa Gamma prospered. Chosen for their character, poise and capabilities, its members were leaders with representation in all fields of campus activities.

This was the bright picture painted for Alpha Phi's director of extension, when she visited the campus in 1948. Forth with a committee of alumnae, prepared the way for the members of Phi Kappa Gamma to give themselves to Alpha Phi. The ceremony took place on May 1, 1949, in the home of Marian Mitchell Peckham.

In order that they might become thoroughly versed in Alpha Phi lore, the new members met every Monday evening throughout the summer. Their enthusiasm swept twenty freshman into the fold when an eight day rushing season gave them the opportunity to interest others in their chosen fraternity.

On October 1, 1949, twenty-four collegiate and nineteen alumnae members of Phi Kappa Gamma were initiated into Alpha Phi in their own chapter room in the House of Hospitality by collegians of Beta Delta, Beta Psi, and San Diego, Los Angeles, and Pasadena alumnae. Gamma Alpha is the first in the Gamma Dynasty of Alpha Phi. We leave her firm in the belief that she will give a good account of her stewardship.
