We
would love to have you as a student in our program. We have an excellent
training program
and the reasons for that are the outstanding students
who are committed to becoming officers in
the United States Air Force.
In San Diego, regardless of the school you attend, everyone is eligible
to take Air Force ROTC at San Diego State University. It is not mandatory
to have a scholarship
to participate in Air Force ROTC, but we think you
should apply for the scholarship to help pay for
school. There are
plenty of chances to receive scholarships through our program even after
you've
entered college, so don't give up hope if the money is a big issue.
As a freshman and sophomore, you will take
one academic class and leadership laboratory once a
week. As a freshman,
you will be introduced to AFROTC and to the Air Force by explaining how to
wear
the uniform, what it means to be an officer, how the Air Force is organized, how
and when to
salute, etc.
Just a lot of informative information to get you off to a good start in AFROTC.
In the sophomore
class, you will learn about the history of the USAF. In
leadership laboratory, you will learn how to
march, take the physical fitness
test one each semester (push ups, sit up, and a 1.5 mile run), have
briefings on
careers in the Air Force.
In the summer after your sophomore year, you
will attend field training (officer boot camp) for 4 or 6
weeks. There, you
will sharpen your leadership and followership abilities along with your
communication,
organization, and time management skills.
When you return for your junior year, if you
are not already on contract, you will then have to decide if you
would like to
serve in the Air Force. If you do not, then you can walk away. If you do,
then you will sign a
contract and receive a scholarship (if you were not already on
scholarship). As a junior and senior, you
will be in charge of planning
the events for the detachment and training the younger cadets. Academics
will
change to the following:
Juniors - Leadership and Management class for 3 hours per week and leadership laboratory
Seniors - Preparation for Active Duty class for 3 hours per week and leadership laboratory
Once you receive your degree, you will be
commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force with a
4 year service
commitment (10 for pilots, 6 for navigators).
In
addition to academic classes and leadership laboratory, cadets receive
officer training through a variety
of other sources. Each semester
we visit an Air Force base to show and introduce our cadets to life as
an
officer. Cadets are given a tour of the base, briefings on different
careers, and are housed in Visiting Officer
Quarters. This is not
a mandatory event, but most cadets will tell you that you really miss
a lot of good
information if you do not partake in these excellent opportunities.
In the past, we've visited Nellis Air Force
Base (AFB), Nevada, Davis-Montham
AFB, Arizona, and Peterson AFB, Colorado. A few other extra
curricular
training events are:
-Shadowing officers at an Air Force Base
for 2 weeks in the summertime (stateside and overseas)
-Combat survival training
-Cadet Training Assistants at field training
