Pathways 2 College

Pathways to College is a community based program committed to helping first generation African American prepare themselves for college admissions. The families involved in the program attend monthly informational meetings and special programs. Additionally, free tutoring is offered to students in the areas of English, social studies, math and science.

Pathways 2 College is a not for profit community based organization whose primary intent is to assist African-American students and their parents in south San Diego with their academic needs or challenges. In the Sweetwater Union High School District African-American students overall consistently score poorly on standardized tests and are not completing the requirements for four-year college entry. Pathways 2 College was established in 2005 with monthly workshops, which provided support for middle, and high school students with basic and enrichment skills. Pathways 2 College also had the opportunity to present several guest speakers whose topics included Black history, academics, peer pressure, goal setting, understanding transcripts, and A-G requirements. Pathways 2 College also works with parents to provide support and critical information that will help parents seek out opportunities and resources available. There is also a tutorial component offered in the core academic areas for additional support.
