THE GREEN ROOM

The day begins again
With the rising amber sun.
Blue moon blends with gold to give
The hue of new beginnings,
A beginner's mind.

Sibling rivalry.
The child no longer
the center of mother's world.
A new face screams for attention,
attention directed away. He wants, he needs.
That baby is the only thing to his beloved mother.

He hates when it suckles at the breast he once rested his head upon. He punishes his mother in his childish way. He pushes her away when what he would most want is the safety of her embrace. The baby cries just as she puts her arms around the boy. He wants to quiet that miserable little thing. A child yearns to win back the attention and affection of his mother.

He has stolen the bottle of milk and warm
blanket. He is awarded a scolding,
but it's attention just the same.
He cries alone, hearing
his mother's muted
endearments to
the feeble
infant.
