Marie E.
Flatley, Ph.D.
Dr. Marie E. Flatley teaches courses in business communication in the College of Business Administration at San Diego State University. She received her B.B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. In addition, she has done post-graduate study in AACSB sponsored programs at the University of Minnesota and Indiana University. Additionally, she has served as a Fellow at the university's Center for Teaching and Learning and as a Qualcomm Fellow in the pICT (people, Information,, Communication, and Technology) program. She is active in many professional organizations, including the Association for Business Communication, the California Business Education Association, Delta Pi Epsilon, and the National Business Education Association.She has served as President of the Association of Business Communication and is a Distinguished Member and Fellow of the Association. The California Business Education Association recently named her Business Educator of the year for the senior college/university level. Additionally, she as served as Associate Editor for the Journal for Business Communication and Editor for the NABTE Review. She has been a reviewer and member of the editorial revew board for the Journal of Education for Busines and has been section editor for the Communication and Information Technology sections of the Business Education Forum. Futhermore, she has served as chair of the Delta Pi Epsilon Research Awards Committee and on the editorial board for the Delta Pi Epsilon Journal Her current research interests involve using technology to assist with the communication process. She is investigating the effective use of blogging, microblogging, and text messaging for business as well as the effectiveness of other wireless, video, and cloud-based technologies. She has published several articles and books on business communication. Her most recent articles include one on teaching virtual presentation skills (September 2007) and one on the Kindle ebook (September 2008) appeared in the Business Communication Quarterly. And her most recent book, co-authored with Kathy Rentz, is Business Communication, McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2010.
