Metabolic Adaptations to Training

Training effect depends on type of training performed (principle of training specificity).

Aerobic training will:

 

Have no effect on

Increase

fiber type

muscle capillary density

anaerobic enzymes

myoglobin

buffering capacity

mitochondrial density

ATP-PCr enzymes

mitochondrial enzymes

 

muscle glycogen & fat stores

Training shifts La threshold curve to the right (i.e., an athlete must run at a faster pace in order to accumulate the same amount of blood La as before training).

Anaerobic training will:

 

Increase

Have no effect on

ATP-PCr enzymes

aerobic enzymes

glycolytic enzymes

 

buffering capacity
